Paralympian Jonnie Peacock: “Enjoy Life as it Comes”


Jonnie Peacock was just 19 when he won gold in the 100m T44 final in 10.90 seconds at the 2012 London Paralympic Games, and he’s determined to retain his crown this summer in Rio. MF caught up with the Team GB star to quiz him over life’s big questions.

What’s the one thing you make time for every day?

Epsom salt baths for recovery are ridiculously good. It’s basically a soak in magnesium for muscle relaxation.

Nature or nurture – did you inherit or build your body?

My grandad played football and was called “pocket rocket” because he was small and fast. That’s probably helped but I’ve had to work hard to get here.

What motivates you when your willpower is waning?

To improve at something every session, no matter how small.

Why have you succeeded where others have failed?

Luck and great coaches that never tried to break me.

What’s the meaning of your life?

Enjoy life as it comes. Right now my focus is to run. One day it will be my family and I’ve always thought about getting involved in the politics of the sport.

What’s your perfect day?

A rest day on the sofa, eating rubbish food, watching TV and playing Xbox – basically most people’s Sunday.

Routine or spontaneity?


What’s the best life advice you’ve ever received?

What’s the one thing most people don’t do that they should?

Exercise in general. Don’t push yourself too hard. Keep it small and consistent, then build it up.

What did you learn from your greatest failure?

Don’t worry about the competition – focus on your own race.

Yoga pants or weighted vest?

What’s a weighted vest? I guess that answers the question.

What move do you do every workout without fail?

Lots of dynamic stretching. I focus on my hamstrings and glutes with lots of leg swings.

Clean eat or dirty bulk?

Dirty. Every Sunday I load up on bacon and egg toasted sandwiches.

Barbell or bodyweight?

Barbell. My favourite lift is a tie between step-ups and the push press.

Slow cook or fast food?

Quick, easy and tasty is my nutrition mantra. My go-to is steak fried in coconut oil with broccoli and a salad.

How do you want to be remembered?

As a champion. A double Paralympic champion – at least.

If you ruled the world, what’s the first thing you’d change?

I’d be too scared to change anything. I might break it. But if I had to, it would be to send people to prison for animal cruelty.

What makes you uncomfortable?

My packed diary – I’m always worried I’ve forgotten something.

What phone app could you not succeed without?

Dartfish – a slow-mo video analysis app for my training.

What’s the best perk of being you?

Getting to travel the world and train for a living. The Maldives is the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen.

What’s your secret for getting psyched up ahead of a big workout?

Save your pre-workout for the biggest sessions.

And your top nutrition tip for recovery?

Have a protein shake with breakfast the day after a big workout.

How about carbs? Love them or loathe them?

Carbs are crucial for recovery. Don’t demonise them.
